IndiGo’s direct flights between Guwahati and Bangkok begin this week. A special inaugural flight will operate between the two cities on Tuesday, 27 October, and regular service starts on Saturday, 31 October. The route will run twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It is the first international service IndiGo has run from Guwahati, a city it has served since 2006.
The Bangkok link is the third international route from Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport this year, following Air India’s weekly flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Why it matters
Until now, travellers from Assam and the wider Northeast usually had to fly west to Kolkata or Delhi before heading east to Thailand, adding hours and a connection to a short trip. A direct flight puts Bangkok within easy reach of the region and gives Thai visitors a simple way into Northeast India. That should help tourism, trade and family travel in both directions.
Timing matters too, because Thailand’s entry rules changed recently. Since 15 September 2026, Indian ordinary passport holders get a 30 day visa exemption for tourism, according to the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi. The earlier visa free stay was 60 days. People who need longer, or who are travelling for business meetings or work, should look at the appropriate visa instead.
What you can do
- Check flight timings and fares on IndiGo’s website or app before planning connections, as schedules can shift in the first weeks of a route.
- Keep holiday plans within 30 days, or apply for a Thai visa if you need more time.
- Confirm current entry requirements with the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi before you fly.
- Remember that the flight runs only twice a week, so build some slack into return dates.
