A phone arrives with a cracked screen. A refund for a cancelled flight never shows up. The seller stops replying. If that sounds familiar, you can file a consumer complaint on WhatsApp with the government’s National Consumer Helpline, and it takes about five minutes. Save this number: 8800001915.

The timing matters. Festive sales are in full swing, and so are wrong deliveries and stuck refunds. Yet most people never complain formally, because they assume it means a court case. It does not. This guide explains how the helpline works, what to keep ready and what happens next.

What the National Consumer Helpline is

The National Consumer Helpline, or NCH, is run by the Department of Consumer Affairs. It is a free, pre-litigation service. In other words, it tries to settle your problem with the company before anyone goes to a consumer court.

When you register a complaint, you get a docket number. The helpline then forwards your complaint to the company, regulator or ombudsman concerned. The company updates its response on the same system, and the helpline sends reminders. According to the NCH website, a complaint can take up to 30 days to reach a conclusion.

It also works. Between April 2025 and July 2026, the helpline helped settle 1,66,189 refund complaints across 35 sectors, with refunds of more than ₹105 crore, DD India reported. E-commerce led by a wide margin, with over 1 lakh complaints and refunds above ₹74 crore. Travel and tourism came second.

How to file a consumer complaint on WhatsApp

The WhatsApp service is a chatbot. It runs 24 hours a day in English and Hindi, so you can file at midnight if that is when the problem hits.

  1. Save 8800001915 and send it a message, such as “Hi”. You can also scan the QR code on the NCH website.
  2. Choose your state.
  3. Pick the company you are complaining about.
  4. Select the type of grievance, for example a defective product, non-delivery or a refund.
  5. Describe the problem and upload your supporting documents.
  6. Save the docket number you receive. Take a screenshot as well.

Later, you can check the status in the same chat. Alternatively, you can track it on the NCH website using the docket number.

What to keep ready before you start

A clear, well documented complaint gets a faster response. So, before you open the chat, gather these:

  • The order confirmation or invoice, and proof of payment
  • Photos or a short video of the defect or wrong item
  • Screenshots of your chats, emails or calls with the company
  • Any earlier complaint or ticket numbers the company gave you
  • For online orders, the product page and the return or refund terms

Then write your complaint in date order. Say what you bought, when, how much you paid, what went wrong and what you want: a replacement, a repair or a refund. Keep it factual. Angry complaints are understandable, but specific ones get results.

Other ways to reach the helpline

WhatsApp is not the only option. You can also call the toll-free number 1915 or 1800-11-4000 between 8 am and 8 pm. In addition, you can send an SMS to 8800001915, use the NCH app or the UMANG app, or file on the website. The helpline offers its services in 17 languages.

If the complaint is not resolved

The helpline is not a court, and a docket number does not start a legal case. Still, if the company does not fix the problem, you can take it to a Consumer Commission. These complaints are now filed online through the e-Jagriti portal.

A few points make this less intimidating than it sounds:

  • No fee for smaller claims. Filing is free for claims up to ₹5 lakh.
  • Start at the district level. District Commissions handle cases where you paid up to ₹50 lakh, under rules revised in 2021.
  • You do not need a lawyer. Consumers can file on their own.
  • Watch the clock. Generally, a complaint must be filed within two years of the problem.

Your NCH docket and the company’s replies also become useful evidence at this stage. That is one more reason to file with the helpline first.

A word of caution

Scammers often post fake “customer care” numbers online, especially during sales. So, always take the helpline’s numbers from the official NCH contact page. Never share an OTP, your UPI PIN or card details with anyone who calls about a complaint.

Most problems with a festive order end with a quick refund. For the ones that do not, filing a consumer complaint on WhatsApp is the simplest first step. It is free, it leaves a paper trail, and companies do respond to it.
