Google Maps can keep a downloaded area on your phone for use when mobile data is unavailable. The important detail is what the download includes: it supports navigation within that area, but it does not reproduce every feature of the connected app.

Treat it as one part of your travel preparation. A map can help you locate a street while a separately saved address, booking reference and contact number help you finish the journey.

Download the area before leaving

On Android, open Google Maps while connected and signed in. Tap your profile picture or initial, choose Offline maps and use Select your own map. Adjust the rectangle and download it. Google’s official instructions also explain downloading a place from its information page.

Include the full route, rather than just the destination. If you are landing outside the city centre, check that the airport and accommodation both fit inside your saved area. Review the storage estimate before starting a large download.

Know which directions need a connection

Google says offline maps do not provide walking, cycling or public transport directions. Offline driving also lacks traffic information and alternative routes. Availability varies by country or region, so confirm that downloading is supported for your destination.

Do not read an offline driving route as a pedestrian itinerary. It may direct you along roads that are unsuitable for walking. For a station exit, last mile walk or bus change, save the relevant instructions while you still have a connection.

Build a small backup travel folder

Keep the accommodation’s written address and reception number in a note that works offline. Save booking documents to the device itself, then open them once to confirm they are accessible. A link inside an email is not the same as a downloaded document.

For a complicated arrival, add a screenshot of the meeting point and write down the name of the person or company collecting you. Share only the details required for the trip, especially on a shared device.

Before departure, revisit Offline maps to check the download and its update status. Test the map briefly without mobile data in a familiar place. Keep the phone charged and carry a written address if losing access to the device would leave you stranded. None of these backups replaces checking current local transport information when you can reconnect.

If someone else is organising the journey, ask for the full address before departure. A venue nickname or a shared pin alone may be difficult to explain when your connection disappears.
