WhatsApp has started testing scheduled messages on the iPhone. The feature lets you write a message now and have it sent automatically later, anywhere from 10 minutes to two weeks ahead. It is rolling out to some testers on WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.42.10.19, according to WABetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp test builds. Android beta testers began getting the same feature earlier in October.

How it works

Type a message, then press and hold the send button. A date and time picker opens. Choose a time and confirm with the green button. The message goes out on schedule even if WhatsApp is closed, and it stays end-to-end encrypted. You can schedule text, links, photos and videos, though each photo or video needs its own scheduled message.

Pending messages sit in a section of the chat info screen, where you can delete them before they are sent. The other person is not told if you cancel one. In groups, a scheduled message reaches only people who were members when you scheduled it, not those who join later.

Why it matters

Scheduling has long been one of the most requested WhatsApp features. Until now, people have relied on third-party apps or phone reminders to send midnight birthday wishes, rent or fee reminders on the first of the month, or messages to family abroad at a sensible hour. A built-in option removes the need to give another app access to your chats.

What to watch

  • WhatsApp has not announced a date for a wider release. Reports from testers suggest more accounts will get it over the coming weeks.
  • Beta features can change before release, so details such as the two-week limit may shift.
  • Avoid apps or links that promise to unlock the feature early. Wait for it to arrive in an official WhatsApp update from the App Store or Play Store.
