Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee hosted a Diwali celebration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, India.com reported on 24 October. Guests, including actor Rani Mukerji and designer Masaba Gupta, came in sarees, lehengas and embellished jackets. The setting leaned on familiar festive details, with flowers, cascading pomegranates and a peacock centrepiece, alongside a long table of international dishes and Indian sweets.
The evening follows a bigger tie-up. In August, Sabyasachi and The Met announced a multi-year partnership in which the label draws on the museum’s collection for jewellery, accessories and clothing. The first collection is high jewellery inspired by Byzantine art, with every piece designed and handcrafted in India by the label’s artisans. It was presented at New York Fashion Week in September.
Why it matters
It is a notable moment for Indian craft: a museum of The Met’s standing has opened its collection to an Indian label whose pieces are made by Indian artisans. Hosting Diwali in the same building, which is also home to the Met Gala, puts the festival and the way India dresses for it in front of a global fashion audience.
What to watch
- Whether the partnership moves beyond high jewellery into clothing and accessories, which the agreement allows.
- If you are planning a festive look, the evening’s mix of classic sarees with modern touches, such as a saree drape worn with a structured corset, is an easy idea to borrow.
