Jio has added voice only plans to its prepaid list, and they start at Rs 147. If you mostly make calls and use Wi-Fi for everything else, Jio voice only plans could trim your bill. The catch is that only some of them are actually new.
Quick answer
- Four plans are new: Rs 147 for 22 days, Rs 177 for 28 days, Rs 196 for 30 days and Rs 197 for one calendar month.
- Each has unlimited calls and 300 SMS, with no mobile data.
- The Rs 448 plan (84 days) and the Rs 1,748 plan (336 days) already existed. They now sit under a TRAI mandated section.
- They suit Wi-Fi users, second SIMs and feature phones.
Jio voice only plans at a glance
According to Beebom, Jio listed six voice only plans. None of them includes mobile data.
| Plan | Validity | Calls | SMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 147 | 22 days | Unlimited | 300 |
| Rs 177 | 28 days | Unlimited | 300 |
| Rs 196 | 30 days | Unlimited | 300 |
| Rs 197 | One calendar month | Unlimited | 300 |
| Rs 448 | 84 days | Unlimited | 1,000 |
| Rs 1,748 | 336 days | Unlimited | 3,600 |
Also, the two long plans carry extras. Reports mention JioTV and JioAICloud, although one report only says selected Jio apps and OTT services. Because of that, check the plan page before you pay for the extras.
What is actually new
However, the four short plans are new. The Rs 448 and Rs 1,748 plans have been around since 2025, as Beebom notes. So the headline about 84 and 336 day options is partly old news. Still, what changed is where they are listed: a section for TRAI mandated packs.
Why TRAI is involved
TRAI asked operators to offer separate voice and SMS plans that match their existing bundled offers, as The Tech Outlook reports. Airtel and Vi moved first, so Jio followed. In short, this is a regulatory step as much as a pricing move. Reports do not give the date or exact terms of the order.
How much you save
Beebom compares the new plans with Jio’s data plans. For example, the Rs 177 plan costs Rs 12 less than the Rs 189 plan, which has the same 28 days and 2 GB of data. The Rs 147 plan costs Rs 92 less than the Rs 239 plan, which gives 22 days, 1.5 GB a day and 100 SMS a day.
So the saving is real, but you also give up all mobile data. Therefore, the maths only works if you truly do not need it.
Who should consider Jio voice only plans
- People with a second SIM that only receives calls.
- Feature phone users, including many senior citizens.
- Households that already pay for home broadband and rarely use mobile data.
Who should skip them
However, if you use UPI, maps or WhatsApp calls outside Wi-Fi, a voice only plan will frustrate you. Also, OTPs for banking arrive by SMS, but app based payments need data. A plan with 300 SMS is usually enough for OTPs, yet it will not run your apps.
Before you switch
- Check your actual data use in the Jio app for the last two months.
- Compare the plan list on Jio’s own website, because prices and validity can change.
- Then make sure your number is safe. Our guide to checking mobile connections in your name takes two minutes.
- If you want a data backup, see how to activate an eSIM in India.
What we could not confirm
Reports differ slightly on validity of the longest plan, with one saying 338 days instead of 336. We have used 336 days, as most reports do. Also, we have no verified details of Airtel’s voice only plans, so we have left out a comparison.
