What Apple says is new in the M6 chip

Apple says the M6 is built on a 2 nanometre process. It has a 12 core CPU and a 12 core GPU, with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core. Apple claims up to 30 percent faster graphics and up to 25 percent faster on device AI than the M5.

The screen is a 14.2 inch Liquid Retina XDR display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Apple lists a peak HDR brightness of 1,600 nits. Battery life is claimed at up to 24 hours, depending on how you use it.

The ports remain practical. You get three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, an SD card slot, MagSafe 3 charging and a headphone jack. These are Apple’s own claims, and we have not tested the laptop.

Who should buy now and who should wait

If your current laptop is slowing down your work, the base model is the simplest choice. Memory matters more than storage for most people, so the 24GB variant may suit video editors and developers. Storage can be handled with an external drive, but memory cannot be upgraded later.

Meanwhile, the launch report says higher end models with an OLED touchscreen are expected. So if you prefer to wait for a bigger redesign, you may want to hold on. Apple has also refreshed the iMac with the M6, but the reports we checked did not list its India price.
