What UPI Lite is
UPI Lite is built for small payments. You load a modest balance in your UPI app, and then each payment is quick because it skips the PIN step. Because of this, it works well for everyday spends such as chai, autos and groceries.
However, it is not a replacement for normal UPI. Bigger payments still go through your bank account and need your PIN, so UPI Lite is best seen as pocket change on your phone.
UPI Lite limit: the numbers
On 4 December 2024, the RBI raised the per-payment cap from ₹500 to ₹1,000, according to Business Standard. The balance you can hold also went up, from ₹2,000 to ₹5,000. Paytm’s own explainer on the change gives the same figures.
The auto top-up feature started on 31 October 2024. It tops up your balance when it runs low, with up to five top-ups a day, and you can switch it off at any time.
When it helps and when it does not
UPI Lite helps when speed matters. For example, a crowded market stall or a busy shop counter moves faster when you do not stop to enter a PIN.
Still, a few cautions apply. Since no PIN is asked, anyone holding your unlocked phone can spend the balance. So keep only what you need loaded, and turn off auto top-up if you do not want it.
