When a UPI payment failed but your bank still debited the money, the amount should come back on its own, usually within a day or five days. RBI rules set these deadlines, and a bank that misses them owes you Rs 100 for every extra day. This guide explains the timeline, what to do while you wait, and where to escalate.

Quick answer

  • Person to person transfer: reversal is due by the next day (T+1).
  • Merchant payment with no confirmation: reversal is due by T+5 days.
  • Late reversal: Rs 100 per day of delay, credited without a claim.
  • Still stuck: complain to your bank, then the RBI Ombudsman.
  • Do not pay again until you confirm the first payment did not go through.

Why a UPI payment failed but money was debited

A UPI payment has several steps. Your bank debits you, then the receiver’s bank must confirm the credit. If the network drops, or the receiver’s bank is slow, the debit can happen without the credit.

In most cases the system then reverses the debit automatically. This is why the first rule is to wait and check, not to pay again. Sometimes the app shows “failed” while the receiver has actually been paid, so a repeat payment can mean paying twice.

The RBI refund timeline

RBI’s rules on turnaround time for failed transactions took effect on 15 October 2019. Here, T is the transaction day, and the limits are maximums, not targets. The table below shows the UPI cases.

Situation Reversal deadline Compensation
UPI transfer, debited but receiver not credited T+1 Rs 100 per day after T+1
UPI merchant payment, no confirmation at the merchant T+5 Rs 100 per day after T+5

The RBI notification says compensation should reach your account “suo moto”, which means without waiting for a complaint. In practice, however, it is still wise to raise a complaint if the money is late. The full table is on the RBI notification page.

What to do, step by step

  1. Check both places. Open your bank statement and the UPI app history. Note the UPI reference number, amount, date and time.
  2. Wait for the deadline. Give the bank until T+1 for a transfer, or T+5 for a merchant payment.
  3. Raise a complaint in the UPI app. Open the failed payment and look for the help or dispute option. Save screenshots of the debit and the failed screen.
  4. Contact your bank. Share the UPI reference number and ask for a complaint number to track.
  5. Ask about compensation. If the refund is late, the Rs 100 per day rule applies from the day after the deadline.
  6. Escalate. If the bank does not resolve it or does not reply within 30 days, approach the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme with your complaint number and papers.

Common mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is paying again too early. Then there is the habit of deleting screenshots, which you may need later. Also avoid calling numbers you find in search results, because fake “customer care” lines are a known fraud route.

Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone who offers to “process your refund”. A refund never needs your PIN. Be careful with QR codes too, since you do not scan a code to receive money. A note on wrong payments

These deadlines cover failed transactions. They do not cover money you sent to the wrong person by mistake. That is a different case, where the receiver or their bank must agree to return it. Report it to your bank quickly, though, because speed helps.

FAQ

How long does a failed UPI payment refund take?

A transfer should be reversed by the next day. A merchant payment should be reversed within five days. If it takes longer, the bank owes Rs 100 per day of delay.

Where do I complain if my UPI refund is not received?

Start in the UPI app and with your bank. If the bank does not fix it or does not reply within 30 days, go to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.

Should I pay again if the payment shows failed?

No. First check your bank statement and ask the receiver if they got the money. Pay again only when you are sure the first payment failed.
