The Navi Mumbai airport shift is now official for some IndiGo and Air India Group flights, with moves phased in from December 2026 through the summer 2027 schedule. The airlines announced the plan on 25 October 2026, according to Skift. If you fly from Mumbai next year, this could change which airport you go to.

Quick answer

  • Air India Express: four daily domestic flights from Navi Mumbai from December 2026, international flights from January 2027
  • IndiGo: international flights start moving in February 2027, with the shift continuing through July 2027
  • Winter slots at Mumbai’s main airport stay unchanged, after government intervention
  • Check the airport name on every ticket you book for 2027

Why the Navi Mumbai airport shift is happening

Mumbai’s Terminal 1 is being redeveloped. As a result, domestic flights need space elsewhere. Adani Airport Holdings had planned to remove 265 of Terminal 2’s 770 weekly international departure slots from 25 October, which would have affected 46 carriers.

Airlines objected because the winter schedule was already approved and tickets were sold. IATA called the plan a “forced relocation”. After government intervention, Adani left the winter slots unchanged. The phased move is the compromise.

What moves, and when

Air India Express goes first. It will run four daily domestic flights from Navi Mumbai from December 2026. Its international flights follow from January 2027.

IndiGo starts later. Its international flights begin moving in February 2027 and continue through July 2027. The routes include Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Kuwait City, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka and Jakarta, plus a daily Kathmandu service. Most are Gulf routes. IndiGo will also shift some domestic flights to feed connecting traffic.

What it means for your trip

The two airports are about 45 km apart. A metro link between them is not expected until 2031, so the road journey matters. Airport transport has already been expanded for the winter season, and the airports are linked by a free hourly shuttle.

Fees are another open question. Passenger fees at Navi Mumbai are listed at ₹1,225, against ₹615 at Mumbai. The final user development fee decision rests with the ministry. So watch for that before you compare fares.

For now, nothing changes for tickets already issued for the winter schedule. However, if you book Gulf or Dhaka flights for February 2027 onwards, read the booking confirmation closely. Then allow extra time to reach the right airport.
