Train ticket transfer is allowed in India, but only under strict conditions. If you cannot travel, you can pass a confirmed ticket to a close family member by applying at least 24 hours before departure. So instead of cancelling and losing money, here is how the rule works.

Quick answer

  • Apply at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure.
  • Go in person to the nearest Railway Reservation Office with a written request.
  • Carry the printed reservation slip and the original photo ID of one passenger on the ticket.
  • Transfer is allowed to close family and it can be granted only once.

Train ticket transfer rules in India

IRCTC’s own page on e-ticket amendments says a confirmed e-ticket can be transferred to another person. The request must reach the railway at least 24 hours before the train leaves. Late requests are not accepted.

The ticket is changed, not reissued. As a result, the berth, coach and train stay the same. Only the passenger name changes.

Who can receive the ticket

According to IRCTC, family members include father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, husband and wife. You will need proof of the relationship. For example, a ration card or a birth certificate may help, but ask the office what they accept.

A government servant travelling on duty can also transfer a ticket. However, the department must send a written request at least 24 hours before departure. Older railway guidance, reported in 2018, also allows student and wedding groups to change names with a head’s written request 48 hours ahead. Because that came from news reports and not the IRCTC page, confirm it with the office.

Step by step: how to transfer a confirmed train ticket

  1. Print the electronic reservation slip from your booking.
  2. Write a short request naming the passenger who cannot travel and the person who will travel.
  3. Collect the original photo ID of one passenger on the ticket and the proof of relationship.
  4. Visit the nearest Railway Reservation Office, ideally well before the 24 hour limit.
  5. Ask for the name change to be recorded, then keep any acknowledgement.

Next, carry the printout and your ID to the station. Then the new passenger should also carry a valid photo ID, since the ticket checker may verify it.

What it cannot do

This facility is not a way to resell tickets. Selling a confirmed ticket to a stranger is not allowed. Also, a transfer can be done only once, so be sure of the new passenger before you ask.

Waiting list and RAC tickets are different cases, and the page we checked speaks only of confirmed reservations. Because rules change, call 139 or ask the reservation office to confirm.

When to cancel instead

If nobody in the family can use the seat, cancellation is the better route. Charges depend on class and how close to departure you cancel. Our guide on IRCTC cancellation charges and refund rules covers the numbers. Meanwhile, if a train runs late or the chart is incomplete, see how to claim a refund through IRCTC TDR filing.

The IRCTC page describes an in-person request at a Railway Reservation Office with a printout and ID. Check the IRCTC site for any newer online option.

Rules are from IRCTC’s e-ticket amendment notice.
